There's a common misconception that choosing to elope means you're limited to two witnesses, a courthouse, and a quiet dinner. Today's elopements can look very different. For many couples, eloping means choosing a smaller, more intentional ceremony where the focus is on their vows, their connection, and the beauty of the moment.

It's not necessarily about running away in secret. Sometimes, it's about stepping away from the expense, expectations, and stress of a traditional wedding. And there's certainly no rule saying you can't celebrate with a larger reception afterward.

That's why these five California Central Coast locations made our list. They aren't all well known, but each offers something special for couples who love ocean breezes and the freedom of a less traditional celebration.

Point San Luis Lighthouse

Best for couples who love history, distinctive architecture, and dramatic coastal views. It gives "Wait! Can we get married there?" vibes. This historic 1890's era lighthouse, in Avila, California gives a wonderfully secluded feel to your celebration. It even requires private shuttle or boat to get here. The lighthouse is also on the National Register of Historic Places.

The ceremony location is on a private bluff with panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, and receptions can be held inside or outside. Maximum capacity is 100, but with such limited access, a more intimate setting is especially fitting.

They have a preferred vendor list, and outside vendors must be approved. Beer and wine are okay, but hard liquor is not allowed.

Avila Beach House

Best for couples who want a beachfront wedding with reception and accommodations nearby. Also located in Avila Beach, Avila Beach House offers several wedding packages, including a ceremony-only elopement option for up to 12 people, starting at $1,500 before additional fees. Their larger packages can accommodate intimate ceremonies and receptions, with many of the basic ceremony and reception rentals included.

Many Central Coast beach locations do not allow receptions on the beach, so having reception space available onsite makes planning much more convenient than transporting yourselves and your guests to another location. The venue also has priority access to its designated beach ceremony location, making it an especially convenient option for couples who want to exchange vows on the sand, and they handle the beach permit process for you, should you choose the beach ceremony.

Avila Beach House is an all-suite hotel, with discounted room blocks available for wedding guests. Couples booking a reception package are required to reserve a minimum of five rooms, with a two-night minimum stay. Because it's a hotel venue, it's worth noting that a beach elopement doesn't always mean it will cost less than a traditional wedding. However, the included rentals and services can make the cost a worthwhile alternative to renting items separately, while also simplifying the planning process.

The Cliffs at Shell Beach

Best for couples who want an upscale coastal wedding with resort conveniences.

This location is an oceanfront resort perched above the shoreline at Shell Beach. Wedding ceremonies aren't directly on the sand, but are held on the resort's oceanfront lawn. The property has multiple reception settings, including tents and a ballroom, and has beach access for stunning wedding day photos, if desired.

Included in the pricing at the Cliffs is a two-night stay in an oceanfront suite for the couple, oceanfront ceremony location, decorative pillars, and white Chiavari chairs, microphone and speaker system, water station, an on-site wedding coordinator (venue coordinator), and optional rehearsal. There are also dining and spa facilities on site. And I happen to know from experience that their Sunday brunch freshly squeezed orange juice is to die for. All these amenities make this more of a destination wedding experience, rather than simply a ceremony location. And the price will reflect that.

Pismo Beach: A Classic California Beach Elopement

Best for couples who want a traditional beach ceremony without renting an entire venue. Pismo Beach offers the quintessential California beach wedding setting: broad sandy shoreline, ocean waves, and the iconic Pismo Beach Pier. Unlike a hotel wedding, couples can arrange a ceremony directly on the public beach without purchasing a resort wedding package. This option does require an application for a special permit, however, and at the time of writing this article, the fee was $128.66. Permits may be restricted during peak seasons and holidays, so couples should check availability before making plans. Ceremonies are limited to specific locations on the beach.

This is a good option for couples who want the actual experience of exchanging vows with their feet in the sand. It's also a useful choice for couples who would rather put their wedding budget toward photography, dining, or a honeymoon than toward an elaborate ceremony venue, and don't mind not having the privacy of a dedicated venue. Couples will want to consider tides, wind, weather, parking, accessibility, and whether guests will need transportation.

William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach

Best for couples who want a scenic, budget-friendly beach ceremony with convenient guest amenities. Located in San Simeon, William Randolph Hearst Memorial State Beach sits just across Highway 1 from the entrance to Hearst Castle. The beach offers a scenic stretch of coastline with a more natural, less commercial atmosphere than downtown Pismo Beach.

This location has access to bathrooms and ample parking, which is not always the case for beach weddings. Perhaps not a glamorous detail, but an important one, nonetheless. It's also near several attractions that could make an intimate destination wedding feel like a weekend getaway. Guests could visit Hearst Castle or explore the nearby elephant seal viewing areas during their stay.

There are some things to be aware of, however: there is a special permit required through the California State Parks, San Luis Obispo Coast District. The cost is $200, and the application must be submitted at least 10 days before the desired ceremony date. This beach is also blacked out during major holidays, all Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend; and during the week before or after Easter. Weekday options during the summer are available, however. This beach also does not allow for receptions. Only wedding ceremonies, so any reception would have to be held at another location.

Honorable Mention: Madonna Inn

This venue isn't located on the beach, but no central coast wedding venue list could be complete without it. This location offers numerous ceremony and reception options to fit the needs of the couple, whether that's outdoors in a meadow, or inside in a ballroom. And their themed rooms are a favorite among visitors.

This location can potentially also save money: if a catering package is purchased that meets their minimum cost, dependent on time of day, and is for 25 or more people, three hours of room rental fee is waived. Now, it's quite unlikely that a ceremony and reception for 25 or more guests, including setup and teardown, will fit into that three-hour window. Couples should anticipate purchasing additional rental time, but the waived three hours could still help lower the overall cost of celebrating at this distinctive Central Coast venue.
